Filler Items

The one thing that makes couponing at Walgreens a little more complicated is the use of filler items. Walgreens has a rule that for every manufacturer coupon you use, you need to purchase an item. Register Rewards count as manufacturer coupons. They don’t count in the one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon per item rule, but they count in the ratio of manufacturer coupons used, to items purchased.

What I mean by this is let’s say that we are buying 5 candy bars that are on sale for $1.00 each, we also have 5 manufacturer coupons that take $.25 off of each candy bar. That would make the 5 candy bars $3.75, but we also want to pay with a Register Reward, which is considered a manufacturer coupon, when it comes to item count. So we have 5 items and 6 manufacturer coupons, so we need one more item.

The Register Reward we are using is for $4.00 dollars, and you don’t get change for Register Rewards, but that’s OK because we need another item. So, we pick up a caramel on display near the register, and use it as a filler item. Fortunately, for us the caramel cost $.25, so our total is $4.00 and we pay with a $4.00 Register Reward. This item was a food product, so there was no sales tax, so we ended up with 5 candy bars and a caramel, for no out of pocket cost.
